Your Puerto Plata cruise day, step by step

Puerto Plata receives ships at two terminals. Amber Cove in Maimon Bay is the Carnival hub with pools, zip lines and shops right at the pier. Taino Bay sits next to the city and has a faux village with a lazy river. Both put you within 25 minutes of the cable car, the old town and the Brugal distillery.

Step 1: know your port times

Most ships dock around 8 AM and call all aboard at 4 to 5 PM. That gives you roughly 8 hours. Note your exact all aboard time from the daily program, not the official departure, and work backwards from there.

Step 2: pick the right excursion length

  • 4 to 5 hours: city tour with Fortaleza San Felipe, Amber Museum and cable car. A private city tour from USD 65 is the safest cruise option.
  • 5 to 6 hours: half day buggy adventure or a catamaran snorkel trip from Sosua.
  • 7 plus hours: the 27 Charcos de Damajagua, only if your ship stays 8 hours or more.

Step 3: book port pickup

Choose tours that include Amber Cove or Taino Bay pickup. Independent operators wait just outside the terminal gate with a sign. Confirm the meeting point in your voucher the night before.

Step 4: budget your money

Bring small US dollars. A taxi to the city runs USD 25 to 40 each way, cable car tickets are about USD 15, and a Presidente beer on the Malecon is under USD 3. Tip guides and drivers 10 to 15 percent.

Step 5: get back with a buffer

Never cut it close. The road back from Damajagua takes 40 minutes and traffic into Maimon can stall. Aim to be back at the pier 90 minutes before all aboard.
