Fortaleza San Felipe

Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic

What it is

Fortaleza San Felipe is the oldest military fort in the Dominican Republic, a squat star-shaped stronghold built by the Spanish in the 1560s to defend the harbour from pirates and rival powers. It sits on a point at the western end of the Malecon, ringed by cannons and lapped by the sea on three sides. Inside is a small museum of colonial weapons and the cell where national hero Juan Pablo Duarte was once held, while the ramparts give the best photo of the bay and the city skyline rising toward Mount Isabel de Torres.

How to visit

The fort is compact and takes about an hour to walk, including the museum and the ramparts. It anchors almost every city tour, so the easiest way to visit is as part of a guided half-day that adds the Umbrella Street and the rum stop. If you go independently, a small entrance fee applies and the surrounding park is a pleasant place to watch the sunset over the harbour. Go in the morning or late afternoon to dodge the midday heat, as there is little shade on the open walls.

Hours & practical info

Open daily, roughly 9am to 5pm. Small entrance fee; the surrounding seafront park is free and open later.
